The Nintendo Wii virtual sport games can be a fun and addicting way to exercise on a rainy day. Depending on the game, you can elevate your heart rate to a moderate level to receive some health benefits. Nintendo's latest addition, the Wii Fit is flying off the shelves and receiving a lot of attention among the health community. Can this type of virtual recreation really make a significant impact on health? You might want to try it for yourself, particularly the boxing game. In my opinion, anything that is fun and gets people moving and keep moving is a good thing.
The scientific community is now getting on board with this hot commodity and there seems to be a lot of money being offered to research the health effects of these virtual fitness games. In 2004, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded the Health Games Research Center at a cost of $8.25 million. Faculty at several universities have been able to secure funding from the RWJF to conduct research on the health benefits of virtual games.
