Thinking for Design: Types of Learning

A corporate employee attending an event for online training will absorb information much differently than a high school student logging on for an extra-credit french lesson. Here are 7 learning ideas to include in your predesign thinking to help reach your target audience:

1. Holistic: People will learn by presenting the whole picture of information prior to the details.

2. Sequential: Describes the logical presentation of information and follows a very strict sequence of instructions to achieve an outcome.

3. Mind Maps: (flowchart) Concept maps offer a method to represent information visually.

4. Multimedia: the learning environment is integration of text, graphics, animation, sound and video.

5. Problem Based Learning: PBL is any learning environment in which the problem drives the learning. The students are given a problem before learning any knowledge. Then the students will discover that they need to learn some new knowledge before they can solve the problem.

6. Inquiry Based Learning: is an active learning approach focusing on questioning, critical thinking, and problem solving. It’s associated with the idea "involve me and I understand."

7. Gaming: for adventure learner, taking risk, like to try things out, and for visual and global learners the information will be presented as a game.
