Let me begin by saying this is my first time blogging. Excuse the newbie ;~) Twitter is one of the most popular micro-blogging tools currently available. It gets the term micro-blogging because posts are generally limited to a maximum of about 140 - 200 characters. In a paper presented at an eLearning and Software for Education (eLSE), the authors point out advantages and disadvantages of utilizing this type of technology in educational settings. Check out the paper here http://www.scribd.com/doc/2286799/Can-we-use-Twitter-for-educational-activities.
One of the disadvantages pointed out is that the micro-blogging could get off topic. From my experience this is minimized when teachers/professors monitor and participate in what is being discussed in a non-intrusive manner. If a teacher gives subtle and not so subtle hints that he/she is indeed viewing those discussions "inappropriateness" will quickly be minimized. The advantages of utilizing micro-blogging clearly out-weighs the perceived draw-backs. One of the many advantages of micro-blogging is it forces the development of clear and concise ideas with its character limitations. I'll treat this like a micro-blog and end here. (Although I think I may be over the limit)
