Educational Vodcasting

A thought occurred to me the other day while teaching and realizing 5 students were absent from one class alone. How can they learn what they missed? Its difficult as a teacher to reteach in 10 minutes what students have missed the day before. After searching on the web, I came acros a term called Vodcasting. Essentially like podcasting, it includes video, which is great for math teachers because it is imperative to show examples/steps on how certain problems are completed.

Check out the brief, 2 minute run-down of what it is......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zcQEQP6NAY

Benefits:
  • Missed lectures are accessed at any time
  • Ability to stop and replay a section of video for more clarification

Issues:

  • Class attendance (can lower it, especially at the collegiate level)
  • Affects grades
  • Need to limit who can access it (especially if students are under 18)

Podcasts don't really work for classes where written examples are key to understanding. Vodcasting can be a excellent supplement to your class if used properly.
