Star Trek Classroom

A group of "techperts" (experts) at Durham University have designed the first interactive classroom desks. The multi-touch desks are very similar to giant Apple iPhones and allow interaction among students. "The team has linked up with manufacturers to design software, and desks that recognize multiple touches on the desktop, using vision systems that can see infrared light.
SynergyNet will integrate ICT into the fabric of the classroom. The new desk with a 'multi-touch' surface will be the central component; the desks will be networked and linked to a main smartboard offering new opportunities for teaching and collaboration."

The group recognized that this product could help collaborative group work improve its outcomes and also engage hard to reach learners. Watch the demo - I enjoyed the dominoes!

This is great. Soon students wont need books and can access the text right from the desk. Great find. How long do you think we'll have it in PA?

Sarah this is a neat find. Interesting to think what Rodenberry portrays as 23rd century may be here in the 21st century. This technology will be worth following. Given the way mainstream America and the world works, it is my opinion that this technology will proliferate the educational systems fully in five to seven years if they can get past the research stage. Again this is my opinion and we'll have to wait and see! Great find though!

i think its great too. I saw it on abc.com. But I think of things like "How much is this going to cost our schools?" Schools would have to get grants. Thanks for the comments!

I doubt we will be having this in PA too soon. This reminds me of the scenes you see on TV now. Forensic experts use a touch screen to display their work in mid-air. That is just awesome. Technology is the future for all.
